The Solar Homestead is Appalachian State University's entry in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011. Inspired by the pioneer spirit of the early settlers in the mountain region of North Carolina, we have designed a self-sustaining zero energy home.

Meet the Decathlete of the Week!

chelsea royall.

Classification: Graduate Student, Masters of Science and Technology, concentration in Building Science
Job Title: Design Director
Joined the Team: January 2010
Within ASU’s Solar Decathlon Team, Chelsea works with interior, textile, and architectural decisions.
The Best Part?
I enjoy being able to watch the process happen and seeing design concepts become real.

Outside of the Team:
When she’s not working at the Solar Homestead Headquarters, Chelsea enjoys cooking (chicken pot pie & cookies), quilting, hiking, and just being outdoors.

Help Us Stay on the National Mall!

20 homes are now homeless.

Due to a decision on Tuesday, Jan. 11, the location of the Solar Decathlon 2011 has been moved from the National Mall. Join us in our efforts to keep the competition on the Mall. Thousands have already pledged. Petition today to give our competition a home.
