The Solar Homestead Wins People's Choice Award!!!

We are so proud to announce that our team has won the People's Choice award at the U.S. Solar Decathlon 2011!! We could not be more excited to hear that the public choose the Solar Homestead as their favorite project!

Each and every home had so many innovative ideas and beautiful designs and we feel honored to be voted as the people's favorite.

The support of our community has been tremendous. We could not have come this far without the support of the Appalachian State University students, alumni, faculty and staff, and support of the entire UNC system and the state of North Carolina. Thank you so much for sharing in this great experience, we've learned so much from the collaboration!

But most of all, we could not have done this if we had not worked together. The Solar Homestead is not just a team of students, we have truly become a family. As we pack up and take our house back to Boone, our family we've built will be more important than ever to get through the 'Solar Decathlon hangover'.

Appalachian State University's The Solar Homestead has taken second place in the
Solar Decathlon 2011's Communications contest!!

During the past two years, educating the public on the tremendous potential that solar power and renewable energy have, has been a key goal of The Solar Homestead team. Knowing that we have reached out and raised awareness in such a way to be honored with this award is an incredible feeling. Through many different disciplines, ranging from Anthropology, Sustainable Development, Physics, Broadcast Media and Technical Photography, our Communications team has worked hard along with the help of the rest of the Homestead team to focus on this goal!

This also would not have been possible without our dedicated community behind us. We spent weeks folding hats to get our takeaways ready for the Solar Decathlon. Hundreds of people came from Appalachian State University and the rest of the community to our folding partys, and we got to talk about Solar Decathlon, sustainability, and solar energy. Without your help this may not have been possible. Thank you!

We would like to take time out to recognize and thank all of the people who've supported Appalachian State University's The Solar Homestead! We've gotten such a tremendous amount of support from our Appalachian family and all of your personal visits to our "home away from home" here in DC, notes, tweets, Facebook "shout outs" emails and calls have all meant so much to us!

Appalachian State Places 3rd Place in Architecture Contest!

The Solar Homestead has placed 3rd in The Solar Decathlon 2011's architecture contest!

We couldn't be more proud of our team for this amazing achievement. We overcame huge obstacles in order to excel in this contest, especially due to the fact that Appalachian State University does not have an accredited architecture program. Instead the students of our Building Science program, within the Department of Technology, along with help from the rest of our team, were given the opportunity to step up to the plate and truly shine.

Reflective Hat Takeaway

Wondering where can you get that hat?

The Solar Homestead designed a dual purpose educational takeaway for the Solar Decathlon 2011. This takeaway is handed out as an origami reflective hat but it contains a wealth of information on the inside.

The unfolded hat gives in depth explanations to the technological innovations of our reinterpreted Trombe wall, concentrating solar thermal skylight, phase change material thermal storage, and bifacial photovoltaic solar canopy as well as our other house features (including our OMs and Flex space) of the Solar Homestead.

We decided to hand out this reflective hat to serve as an educational tool to better understand and connect with our bifacial solar canopy.

This new bifacial technology utilizes the back face of the double panel to generate electricity from ambient light reflected off the surrounding surfaces, and combines with power from the front face of the panel. This can result in 30% higher power generation, or more kWh, per square foot.

We hope that everyone comes to Appalachian State University's Solar Homestead at the National Mall's West Potomac Park sometime from now until Oct 2nd.

Competition and Public Exhibit Have Begun

The Solar Decathlon 2011 had its opening ceremony yesterday, and the Solar Homestead is so excited to have its first judged contests. To keep up with the competition standings go to Solar Decathlon’s website www.solardecathlon.gov.

The affordability contest is a brand new contest to the Solar Decathlon this year. The contest challenges the teams to build a solar powered house that costs somewhere between $250,000- $600,000, with points given out on a sliding scale. This is a great way to measure how residential construction can be zero energy as well as affordable. This is to display how solar technologies can be marketable to the average homeowner and display innovative ideas that can be integrated into the architecture.

The Solar Homestead has created OMs, or Out-building Modules that supply all of the electrical energy that is needed by the home. This feature allows anyone to add PV panels to an existing structure while also providing an outdoor covered space and detached conditioned space.

Our house is affordably marketed to a couple with moderate salaries in the Asheville, North Carolina region. We chose Asheville as our target market because the sustainability movement is well established and our model home fits into the growing trend of green neighborhoods in the region.

Bifacial PV solar Canopy

Our canopy crew has finished our bifacial PV solar canopy. They have been working tirelessly since the very first day of set up to make this feature absolutely beautiful.

Set in a natural white pine structure, our 8.2 kW solar array is architecturally integrated into the Great Porch of the Solar Homestead. Having this allows you to experience your solar energy intimately but still discreetly while you spend quality time with your family and friends on your 800ft²porch.

Steel columns line the great porch as they lead you past the main house to the detached 120 ft²flexible living space that also includes a half bath. This self-sufficient addition includes an outdoor shower and kitchen; showing the versatile nature of our modular Outbuilding Module concept.

This Flex space, as we call it, is topped with an extensive green roof. This sustainable technique will improve the R-value in our roof while making it a more energy efficient building and extending the life of our roofing material.

Going Strong!

We wrapped up the third full day of construction on the Solar Homestead at the Solar Decathlon 2011, and the our team is working hard and on schedule.

Yesterday we got our house modules together and our house sealed up tight. Last night Craig worked on hooking up the plumbing and Joe worked on finishing the perforated corrugated metal detail on exterior of the bay window.

Last night we started to install our kitchen cabinets and unloaded our kitchen appliances from the overstuffed box truck.

Today our team has been working on many tasks all at once. This morning the U.S. Department of Energy installed their data logger to keep track of our energy production and consumption. This is critical to prove that we are truly a zero energy home.

All hands were on deck when we started on our next task. Slowly and steadily all ten pieces of the house and the great porch were leveled making sure that the threshold of the house is flush and level with its porch. This took considerable time but the job was done just as planned.

Moving into the interior, all appliances, besides our beautiful refrigerator, went into the kitchen today and we feel like our house is becoming a home again.

We are ramping up progress on our ADA accessible ramps! They are looking great and it seems to be all downhill from here. We expect to work through the night to get these finished up.

Moving Together As One

The Appalachian State University Mountaineers are going strong and representing well. The team is working like a well oiled machine and the house modules are together to make one home.

Here are the three house modules of the Solar Homestead that are coming together.

Our team is one of the only teams not using a crane to set up, and the other teams are very interested in seeing how our house is coming together. By building our house directly on to steel trailers with jacks mounted on the bottom we can pull them together and level out on the jacks once pushed together on a special rolling system.

By using this roller system we can push the modules into place with the help of a few team members.

Our house is one so we can now start on the inside of our house to escape the on coming rain.

Packing Up and Shipping Out

The Solar Homestead and team have arrived safely in D.C.

These Appalachian State University students have spent 2 years designing and constructing our modern concept the Solar Homestead, a zero energy home completely powered by harnessing the energy of the sun.

The Solar Homestead was sent off to Washington D.C. on Thursday afternoon, which was followed by the OMs, or Outbuilding Modules, on Friday along with a small team of construction crew. They arrived safely with the help of our transportation crew and ready to work before we moved on to the National Mall Tuesday night at 11:00 pm.

Starting last night our construction team of seven have been working around the clock putting together our OMs on to the National Mall and are ready to start moving the three house modules in the next 24 hours.

The second group of Solar Homestead team members arrived today around 7pm, and have jumped in to take over so that we lose no momentum. We are so excited to be here and we will continue to keep everyone updated.

Why Closed Cell Insulation?

The Solar Homestead is using a closed-cell spray foam insulation, mixed with an anti-microbial. This product creates a fantastic air and moisture barrier that helps us ensure an air-tight building envelope around our floors.

Thank you Blue Ridge Energy Works, BREW, for donating the installation!

Provided by NCFI, InsulStar provides a high R-Value and stops pesky air-infiltration. In addition, this product was very nice to use in tight spaces because it adheres to the oddly shaped surfaces on the underside of our trailers.

This foam not only gave us peace of mind ensuring a tight building envelope, but it also uses an environmentally friendly blowing agent with zero Ozone Depletion Potential.

NCFI was awarded the 2004 International Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award from the EPA for their commitment to developing environmentally friendly SPF insulation systems.

Beautiful: multi-generational interest here in the High Country

This Saturday the Solar Homestead team hosted our final local public tours. This all day event was a huge success, and we were delighted to hear that so many people, from all over, have been following our progress.

Over 200 people from all over North Carolina, as well as visitors from around the country, were overjoyed to see the Solar Homestead so close to completion. This has been an excellent learning experience for our team. In getting prepared to tour thousands of visitor on the National Mall, our local public tours get us prepared for those sometime unexpected questions.

The Solar Homestead team had another big push this last week to finish up final details in the house to get ready to host our sponsors, supporting Appalachian State University faculty and staff, as well as our family and friends.

Over 400 guests attended to help recognize our sponsors and students who have made this project possible. Everyone had a great time touring the home and eating delicious barbecue at the Appalachian State University Solar Decathlon Headquarters.

Team members gave tours of our homestead after the address from UNC system President Tom Ross, Appalachian State University's Chancellor Dr. Kenneth Peacock, Dean of College of Fine and Applied Arts Glenda Treadaway, and our own Communications Manager Dave Lee.

This was such a valuable experience for the Solar Homestead team to get a taste of the kind of hard hitting questions that can come from industry professionals so that we are all well rehearsed for tours up on the National Mall's West Potomac Park September 23 - Oct 2.

We would like to thank everyone for making this such an incredible event, and for making the Solar Homestead possible; it would not be possible for us to have done this without you. We feel fortunate to see such overwhelming support from our local community and beyond!

How did you get involved? "The ASU communications department told me about this and I was so enthusiastic that I was the first in my department to tackle the project."

What do you like to do with you time off from the Solar Homestead? "I'm a professional illusionist- so the business and production aspects of that. I also love music, hiking, and running."

What was your favorite part of producing the Solar Homestead videos? "Every project is different and because of that I improve in my skills. I love the spur of the moment camera work I do, where I record parts of the building process and various projects: you never know what's going to happen - so you always are on your toes to not only make sure you're in focus but also to make sure you effectively capture the moment on film."

Magic's Royal Duke Sammy Cortino- Dare to Dream

What are your plans after the Solar Decathlon 2011? " I have the premiere of my touring stage illusion show on January 27th at the Old Post Office Playhouse in Hickory and then I'm basing my magic business in Nashville while I tour."

What is your favorite magic trick to perform? "My card manipulations or my levitation."

What would you do with your Flex-Om? "I'd turn it into a studio."

Fun-facts: Every minute of video takes 10 hours to produce. Over 30 hours of HD video has been shot since last October at a total of 350 gigabytes of data.

Her outstanding work and commitment to the Project Manual last week ensured a comprehensive and complete look at all pieces of the Solar Homestead.

Job Title: Design Team Member

Area of Study: Building Science with a concentration in Architectural Technology and Design, and Spanish.

How did you get involved? "Chad asked me one day after class a year ago, and I've stuck with it ever since."

What is your favorite section of the Project Manual? "One of the last deliverables that I had for the Project Manual in March, I added in a snuggie to the specs just to see if they actually did read the whole thing -- they did. I took it out, but I wish I had put it back in for this one since the judges have less than 30 minutes to review the entire document and I don't think they'd find it this time."

What do you like to do with your time off from the Solar Homestead? "Read a good book, enjoy the outdoors, hang out with sisters, and catch up on some needed sleep."

What was the first thing you wanted to do after finishing the Project Manual? "Have a good meal and sleep after a week of barely sleeping. I went out with some people on the Communication Team for dinner and by 8:30 that night I was out."

After traveling in Spain where would you like to travel next? Definitely Ireland.

What would you do with your OM? "I would use it to store all my old, redlined copies of the Project Manual."

We had so many amazing students who stepped up to the challenge and sacrificed their sleep for our team's success, that we have now chosen to feature the three students whose hard work made these deliverables happen. Meredith Smith: Revit Master extraordinaire

First is Meredith Smith

Job Title: Interior Designer

Area of Study: Interior Design

How did you get involved?
"The Solar Homestead had my interior design class do a brief interior design project, and the parameters were intriguing enough that I wanted to continue on the project after I was approached by Chelsea and Jose."

How do you blow off steam from the Solar Homestead?
"I like to go on 10 mile runs."

What is the coolest thing you have ever done?
"I would have to say scuba diving in Boneaire. My dad was a big dive guy in the 70's. He'd skip his classes in med-school and head down in the Keys. He was known as the Phantom of med-school. He'd come into exams an hour late, still salty and tan and blonde. He'd take off his aviators and have to beg his teachers to let him even try the exam. He'd pass them though. I know it's not the seventies, and I know I can't drive a motorcycle through Mexico by myself, or strap my sleeping bag to the top of a train to hitchhike to Canada, but I want stories like that. The best versions I can."

Why do you like designing?
"I love beauty. I love man's pursuit of some beyond just function. that could have taken me into a lot of fields though. I choose design because I like problem solving, analysis, and order."

If you could write any Syfi novel what would be the general plot?

"OK. Plot. Main setting: a dessert town in the west, current day. Half the land is owned by ranchers and half by a military air base. One of the ranches bordering the government land is owned by a broken man, now an alcoholic. His daughter, 25, runs the ranch, her mother died in childbirth, her sister unborn. The male lead is a twenty-something Mexican-American. His family works the surrounding ranches. He left to join the air-force though. He's is assigned to come back to the local air-base to test a new plane. On one of the test flights, his fighter-jet crashes, and he's stranded on the middle of the girl's 500 acre ranch. Communications are down. He starts walking. Dehydration sets in and he passes out. He wakes up in a cave. There are dragons there. Yep, dragons. No they don't talk. Common misconception."

Solar Homestead Construction Up-date!!!

The construction of the Solar Homestead has come a long way since our last construction update. After typical construction delays, our house is well on its way to being moved outside this weekend to finish testing our solar energy systems.

Trevor and Austin have been framing out the Trombe wall and installing the barn door rail. The phase change material passive collectors have come in today and installation will start tomorrow. Our scientists are thrilled!

Trevor, Nate, and Austin have been finishing the flashing details on the solar canopy ensuring that the canopy will have no leaks.

Everyone has pitched in to the installation of the kitchen cabinets, countertops, and placement of sink and appliances.

Stephen, Travis, and Mike have been working hard to make our hardwood flooring beautiful and perfectly installed.

With construction going on at the Solar Homestead almost 24 hours a day, the Communications team would like to give a BIG THANKS to the Construction team for working so hard to make sure the house was set up for us to shoot our market appeal video. The Architecture team did a great job with helping to stage the home, as well!

We are going to keep up the hard work and everyone on the team is VERY excited to show the Solar Homestead on the National Mall in just a little over one month.

How did you get involved? "I knew about it, and I needed an internship, and I was curious if they needed any help with furniture designing. They did so it sounded GREAT to me."

What do you like to do with your free time away from Solar Homestead? "I work full time at Kilwinn's, so that is what I have been doing all summer, but if i had time I would like to go hiking or go to the beach."

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Chocolate peanut butter and key lime pie. I like to mix them together."

Favorite Pandora station? Biggie Smalls :)

Now that you are on to graduate school at NC State, what three most valuable things did you take away from Appalachian State?

1. The friendships

Taking a break from helping the Construction Team work on the Solar Homestead, our designers have added some interior accessories that will put the finishing touches to the home.

What made you want to get involved? "The Solar Decathlon is such an amazing opportunity and I just wanted to be a part of it."

What is that giant pink thing by your desk? "I came in one morning after my birthday and the construction boys had used a 13ft roofing tube to create a giant lightsaber for me because I am the resident Star Wars nerd."

If you were a Star Wars charter which on would you be? "I would be a Tauntaun. They are my favorite beast from Star Wars and they always have been since I was little."

Hobbies? I like to hang out with my dog, reading, cooking, and painting, and that is pretty much all I have time for."

What has been your favorite Solar Homestead project? "I really enjoyed the take away, but all of it has given me the opportunity to interact with so many different people and help graphically represent such a phenomenal project."

When did you join the Team: April 2011

How did you get involved: "I heard through Bret Sowers about the Solar Decathlon 2011 but I have always been interested in renewable energy and the design and construction of green buildings. He asked me to get involved and I was thrilled to do it."

What is with all the Mohawks on the construction team: "Oh, this is called team bonding."

What is your favorite part of the building process? "I love doing the whole job start to finish. No other project would have given the students this kind of opportunity."

What got you interested in sustainability and appropriate technology? "I have always had an interest in utility scale wind in high school, which led me to further study other renewable energies and also building techniques in college."

What do you like to do in your from time away from the Solar Homestead? "Free time? You mean nap time."

Jose Luis Marino-Saldana

Job Title: Project Interior Designer

When did you join the team? January 2010

How did you get involved? Jeanne Mercer-Ballard announced in class that the university had submitted a proposal to take part in the next Solar Decathlon; once the proposal had been accepted, she encouraged me to become part of the design team.

Best part? Everything: the people involved, the experience gained by being exposed to every single aspect of a real project, and of course, seeing our design being built and used to represent our school and our state in an international competition.

Ice Cream Break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most challenging part? I truly believe right now all of us are enjoying the challenges that come with the project. I think the challenging part will come later at the end of the competition when we have to say goodbye to the house and the team.

Favorite Architect? Dr. Ken Yeang. "We need to rethink our lifestyles. Everything depends on our needs and our own demands."

Governor Beverly Perdue visits the Solar Homestead!

Governor Beverly Perdue Shows Her Support!

On July 7th, Governor Beverly Perdue visited the Solar Homestead to show not only her support, but to demonstrate the support we are receiving from North Carolina as a whole. Accompanying her during her visit were Senator Dan Soucek and Representative Jon Jordan. They arrived at our head quarters eager to hear about all of the progress our team has been making!

After a brief introduction given by our very own head of communications Dave Lee, it was on to the guided tour throughout the facility! Without hesitation Gov. Perdue put on an Appalachian State University colored hard hat showing even further her pride in our project and team.

Demonstrating a genuine interest in solar building, Gov. Perdue engaged in a steady discussion through out the tour involving all of the different aspects of our house design and the ways the average person can implement these ideas.

We would like to thank Gov. Perdue and everyone in attendance including, David Hall and Steve Linton from Deltec Homes as well as Brent Simmons from Mountain Lumber for their continued participation in our project! We know that with the foundation of support that has been set by our sponsors and officials that we will be successful in accomplishing our goals!

A Visit From Congresswoman Foxx!

Representative Virginia Foxx Visits the Homestead!

Yesterday June 29, Congresswomen Virginia Foxx paid the The Solar Homestead headquarters a visit! It was her wish to come and see how far along our team is with construction and to show her support as well as interest in our participation in the Solar Decathlon 2011.

During her visit, our team was able to provide Representative Foxx with a full guided tour as well as some presentations that displayed the steps that Appalachian State University has been taking to become a more energy efficient campus. Rep. Foxx, along with Sen. Kay Hagan, was instrumental in helping to return the Decathlon back to the National Mall earlier this year, and we are extremely grateful for her support.

Mike Germano

Job title: Construction and Project Management team member

Joined team: January of 2011

How did you get involved? "I heard about it my sophomore year. Then my teacher was talking about it because she was excited for it because she was part of Purdue's team a few years ago. I couldn't join for a while because I could not get out of work but I knew I just had to make time so I joined the team in January."

Best part of working on the Homestead? "Conquering sleep...haha... The whole project is fun because everyone is fun to hang out with and we are doing something to better society."

What do you like to do outside of the team? "Sleep and relax outdoors"

Would you rather be a pirate or a ninja? "Definitely a pirate because they get to pillage the seas, drink rum, and have a great time sailing all day."

Would you rather play European football or American football; "European Football.. I played both in high school but I miss soccer more."

Rumor has it you have some kind of Christmas traditions? " H aha. Yeah I grow out my beard and dye it white and dressed up like Santa to go to school. It is a lot of fun!"

Mike has dedicated all his extra time outside of class and work to the Solar Homestead. He has been fantastic about setting the standard for commitment to the project. Thank you for working your pants off!

Design team Up-date

GO TEAM GO!!!

The Solar Homestead team has been busy spreading their design expertise in all aspects of the project development.

The designers have constantly been updating as-built drawings as building of the Solar Homestead has progressed, while also working with the construction team to hash out construction details.

A few team member have been working closely with Philmark furniture company to make a couple of custom pieces that are designed to be reconfigurable. The reconfigurable nature of the furniture allows one piece to serve multiple purposes.

They have also been designing and ordering the kitchen, counter tops, and coordinating all of the finishing details to make this house a beautiful home.

And then, on top of it all, they have been instrumental in our nearly finalized exhibit materials and dinner menus.

Construction Update

The Solar Homestead crew has been very busy and hard at work since the end of spring semester, and with only three months to go until the competition; everyone is excited and continuing to do our best to get ready for the National Mall.

We have seen some delays in our construction, but with many late nights, we have our house on an even better schedule!

The construction team is now done drying-in the structure and we have only two more doors left to install!

We have been working simultaneously on plumbing, electrical and HVAC rough-ins. After inspections we will start weaving insulation between the staggered studs and working on finishing details.

Heather Kinsey

Job title: PV + Electrical Designer

How did you get involved?: "I was in the senior architectural design studio and Dr. Russell and professor Everhart approached me and proposed I get involved with the Solar Homestead as the second semester portion of our studio."

Best part?: "The endless learning opportunities! I could not have imagined a project that embodies so many of the things that I have been exposed to in my college career that I now have the opportunity to practice. Practicing the design of a photovoltaic power system was definitely one of the best parts."

What do you like to do outside of the Team?: "I love to watch the rhododendron bloom."

You would rather be a dog named killer or a cat named fluffy?: "I would rather be named a cat named fluffy because a positive attitude will get you a long way and you never know what to expect from a cat named fluffy, but honestly I would rather be a dog named fluffy."

Would you rather not be able to use your phone or your e-mail?: "These days phones are so fancy, email and phones are one in the same. Except my phone. So I'd give up email."

What has been the most challenging part of this project?: "The most challenging part.... challenges don't seem so hard when you have such a great team on your side. This is not to say that there were no challenging parts but our team is so dynamic that there has always been a person of resource."

What do you like to do outside the team? "I really do like to work, but I also like to fish and hang out with my family and friends."

The Solar Homestead Celebrates Earth Week 2011

Appalachian State University and the Solar Homestead Team participated in a week long Earth Day celebration. From organic smoothies to musical performances, ASU's campus took the week to observe and celebrate our planet. To participate, the Solar Homestead team took an OM to campus in order to display it to the student body. Members of the team were available for questions and answers about the Solar Homestead and the Solar Decathlon.

"I started a green roof independent study and then started talking to Dr. Houser. I had heard of the project through word of mouth but then really became interested after talking with Dave Lee after a solar presentation. And now I'm here!"

"Definitely the people. Everyone that I've worked with has been amazing. Also, I can't grow anything where I live, so being able to grow here is awesome."

Outside the Team?

"When I'm not at the HQ I like listening to a lot of music, gardening, reading & sitting on the couch and hanging out with my boyfriend."

"I don't really like candy bars. I work at an ice cream and fudge place, so candy gets old fast. I'm more of a salty person. "

How did you get involved?

"I got involved with the team because I heard about it and wanted to know what was going on. Also, I thought it’d be a fun project. It's my lifelong dream to build a house and finally after 4 years of college, I would be able to go out and build one. I’ve worked construction before, but I’ve never actually worked from start to finish on a house. "

The Best Part?

"I enjoy being able to come to the headquarters and build a house that could change the way houses are being built in the future."

Outside of the Team:

When he's not working at the Headquarters, Joe enjoys hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, playing guitar, and sleeping.

The Solar Homestead is proud to announce their recent partnership with Buildipedia.com.

In February Buildipedia visited The Solar Homestead headquarters in Boone, NC to document and film the teams daily operations and discussions for the future of residential design and construction.

Buildipedia is an online destination delivering the most accurate and relevant information regarding design and construction. Their operations include editorials, marketing, sales, web and video production.

“This [Buildipedia] will be a great avenue to show off the latest Solar Homestead technology,” said Dave Lee, Communications Manager for The Solar Homestead.

We're Back on the National Mall!

The DOE released a decision today that put the Solar Decathlon back on the National Mall! The competition will take place in West Potomac Park along the path between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The Solar Homestead Team would like to thank all of our supporters for helping return the competition to the nation's front lawn. We are ecstatic that the decathlon has been returned to a place of national progression and prestige. We hope to see you in September on the National Mall!

Opinions Surround the National Mall Usage

The decathlete's struggle to return the Solar Decathlon to the National Mall continues. Although the support to return the competition to the Mall is constantly increasing among teams, universities, and senators; the National Park Service is still opposed.

An editorial published in the Washington Post argued for the removal of the competition stating that the Mall has undergone "neglect and overuse". The Post opinion article pointed out physical damages that the competition had done to the Mall in previous years and the importance of restoring the space.

Thankfully, the public responded with Letters to the Editor concerning the original editorial.

"Spotty grass is a sign of engagement, not shame," said Ryan Montgomery of Washington in his Letter to the Editor. Another letter highlighted our president's words concerning national progress.

"The president could not have been clearer when he said, 'The first step in winning the future is encouraging American innovation.' There is no finer example of this than the Solar Decathlon," said Alan Abrams of Washington in his letter. In these letters, the value of community involvement, creativity, and innovation are restored.

From sending contact emails to planning Boone Green Drinks at the Headquarters, Janelle helps to coordinate events for the Solar Homestead Team.

"I enjoy being a member of the Solar Homestead Team because I get to be a part of such a prestigious and large project. The experience has enabled me to get hands-on experience and expand my education within the field."
Outside of the Team:
"I don't have hobbies. The Solar Homestead is my hobby."

The Solar Homestead team is proud to feature Janelle Wienke as the decathlete of the week due to her outstanding involvement with planning the Boone Green Drinks event. Janelle coordinated with local businesses and helped organize donations to support the night's activities.

Senators Support Decathlete's Movement

The effort to return the Solar Decathlon to the National Mall continues to move forward. Twelve U.S. Senators, including NC Senator Kay Hagan, have shown their support of the movement by signing a letter asking the Secretaries of the Interior and Energy to reinstate the competition on the National Mall.
We would like to thank our Senators for supporting the competition and standing behind the decathletes. In order to support the National Mall as the location of the competition, please consider signing the petition and sending letters to Congress!

Within ASU’s Solar Decathlon Team, Chelsea works with interior, textile, and architectural decisions.
